Alice Council meeting Wednesday April 27th 6.30pm.
On the agenda - a deputation from Central Aust Aboriginal Congress entitled – Rebuilding Family Life in Alice Springs and Central Australia: the social and community dimensions of change for our people.
Sadly the presentation got a bit bogged down on whether or not Council would support a floor price for alcohol. As this is an NT Government decision, I was disappointed to have to spend time rehashing the old arguments.
I was very interested in the project aimed at helping young parents during the first years – this needs to be looked at more indepth.
I was disppointed also to hear the view that there are too many service organisations in Alice and that the money should be funnelled through the few rather than the many. I have seen many small NGO’s offering tailored solutions in a way that larger ones like Congress could not do - people are complex and so the solutions need to be varied and complex. I do not think large organisations necessarily offer better help for people, just different types of help. Jealousy about funding is not a good look – let’s keep the diversity alive!
Please make time to read the excellent handout. There’s lots of good information in there and Congress is certainly a valuable part of the Solutions jigsaw –
