Welcome

Living the life of a millionaire without the bother of all that money - I work as a web designer in the mornings and a massage therapist in the afternoons. I’m an Alderman on the Alice Springs Town Council and I even had a post published on ABC’s The Drum recently - http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/43634.html. Alice Springs is one of the most beautiful places on earth and I have the joy of working with some of the most inspirational people and most interesting projects around. Don’t be misled by the complainers, come to...

Trip 4: Learning Thai Massage in Chiang Mai

Posted by on Feb 17, 2012 in Travel Notes | 0 comments

I studied Thai Massage at TMC school in Chiang Mai in November 2011.  The course was good, clear and takes you through the steps of giving a 1-2hr Thai massage.  The lecturers were professional and stayed exactly on track for all sessions.  The notes were excellent with every one of the 151 positions explained clearly for both the giver and receiver.  So what was missing?  I think it was what I had been warned about in 2005 – when I first studied Thai massage under a teacher in Alice Springs – she said to me that you can...

According to all accounts the Chiang Mai floodwaters have receded and streets are dry although there is mud, silt and mess in some areas.  Some schools have called for volunteers to help clean up – anyone with a broom and a few spare hours would be appreciated – if you are in Chiang Mai and would like to help, head to your nearest school or try the facebook page of ABS Bilingual – https://www.facebook.com/abs.bilingual Best update about the flooding so far has been on Travelfish –...

Count Down to Chiang Mai

Posted by on Oct 2, 2011 in Travel Notes | 2 comments

In 4 days I leave sunny Alice Springs for Chiang Mai, Thailand.  Over the past week, Chiang Mai has been subject to flooding.  There have been video’s on Twitter of the market street knee high in muddy water.  I started to wonder whether I should delay my trip and was a bit concerned about safety and post flood tropical diseases.  It’s still the rainy season which means the flood waters could rise even higher.  Train services between Bangkok and Chiang Mai have been cut. I consulted news web sites and the Australian...

Hold the On/Off button till the Power Off Slide bar shows up. Note: Do not power off though. Press and hold the Home button until the Home screen shows up. Restart your Safari app, it should be OK. Clear safari cache and cookies Tap Settings > Safari and select Clear History, Clear Cookies, and Clear Cache. it’s easy once you know how :/

iPad2 – using magic markers to fix a few things

Posted by on May 13, 2011 in Technology Reviews, Writing | 0 comments

When I first got my iPad2 (it’s now 4 days old), the excitement wore off quite quickly. Is it really only a big iPhone? I have now commenced an endeavour to make this baby useful!  It must pay it’s way! As the only alderman (councillor) on Alice Springs Town Council who is totally paperless, I’ll be reading my papers on iPad2 on Monday night – if there is a #fail, there will be an angry tweet. Follow me on twitter @_ijane_ Also, I want to be able to log into client web sites and update them – can this be...

Apple iPad2 Customer Review

Posted by on May 13, 2011 in Technology Reviews, Writing | 0 comments

I have had my Apple iPad2 3G for 3 days now.  If you want to skim this, please read the last paragraph first – it’s very important. On day 1 I was impressed that it arrived on exactly the day Apple said it would – good service. Apple certainly gets the customer service side right.  You can have 30 days free phone support on new purchases.  I like that – I didn’t expect to have to use it though. It fired up immediately, connected to my wireless network seamlessly and I was up and running.  So, there I was...

Japan Quake Victims – don’t give up

Posted by on May 12, 2011 in Writing | 0 comments

My brother in Tokyo spotted this sign for the quake victims … 東北の皆様がんばってください。Kind of means To all people in Tohoku do your best (or don’t give up). We in the west, in our safe havens, greedily soak up the news of disasters in far away places.  It’s probably not conscious but we are behaving a little like the people in George Orwell’s 1984.  I remember first reading the book in around 1974 and being surprised at the portrayal of characters enjoying movies about the horrors and miseries of...

iPad2 and Fanny Wang Cans -Reviewed

Posted by on May 9, 2011 in Technology Reviews, Writing | 0 comments

Reviewing the technology I use for work as a web developer. I’m currently awaiting the arrival of two items iPad 2 - It will be put through it’s paces and given hell in central australia.  Does that iPad know what it’s in for?  Firstly I have to say I’m very disappointed at the unethical labour apparently used by Apple to produce my iPad.  I still struggle with the fact that many of the items I enjoy today such as cheap clothing, chocolate and technology were created by people living horrible lives with few rights as...
