Chiang Mai is fine. Flooding is a little south. I recommend you fly from Bangkok to CM. It seems that you can get to most tourist spots around CM, but of course that can change quickly in this area.

Hi Jane,
How is everything over there? We will be in Chang Mai next week (~18th) and just learned about the trains being down. Thank god we have a Thai travel agent help, else we would have been totally surprised as well. Any recommendations on things to pack given the weather over there? Or general words to the wise? We're flying to Bangkok on Wednesday.
Thanks!
~Danielle

Many thanks for this posting Jane. I was very moved by what you wrote, you are spot on and it is sad we are losing you from the local government arena. We are in a quandary as to what to do about the deteriorating situation for Aboriginal people particularly here in the NT but also the wider community. We just keep on trying to support people as they struggle and try to get their voices heard.
Unfortunately government has control of the media and the truth is not being widely told. Groups such as STICS (Sydney), 'concerned Australians' (Melbourne), ARC (Brisbane), MIAG (Melbourne), Deaths in Custody Watch Committee (Perth) and of course IRAG (Alice Springs) are all doing their part in raising awareness of what is happening to the people on the ground.

My advice to people is always to become involved in finding out about the indigenous history of where you live. There is a story where ever you are and it needs to be respected and passed on. With regard to helping the NT, be cynical about what you hear no matter who says it. Ask questions and evaluate when you are being scammed. One group who you could get involved with is IRAG - http://rollbacktheintervention.wordpress.com

Hello Jane, just fell into your site by accident. Sad as it is to read about the situation up there, it was still good to read your notes here, straight from the heart and with so much common sense and integrity. Please email me direct with information on how I can help. Are there any non-profit organisations you would particularly recommend as worthy of support, particularly with grass roots initiatives? Warm regards, Patricia
