from: http://eileenlonergan.com/your-small-business-hashtag-guide-broken-down-by-days-of-the-week/

I sometimes see people offer the advice, “don’t worry about followers, they will find you”.  This takes me back to a philosophy I have shared with you before, “you can’t date sitting on the couch”.  If you want followers you need to put yourself out there.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to increase your followers.  You are creating great content and it is awesome that your mom is your biggest fan (thanks mom!), but if you are a business or blogger in order to stay in business or keep your motivation to provide interesting content on a regular basis you want to build an audience.

I know you are busy and doing it all is not easy.  It is my suggestion that you do one thing each day to promote your brand.  This can be an email blast, comment on other blogs, answer a question in a professional group, use social media.

Hashtags are a simple way to categorize your social media posts and are most commonly (and effectively) used on Twitter and Instagram.  People use hashtags as search terms to find content that they find interesting.  I am sure you are familiar with #throwbackthursday (#tbt) where people post photos of themselves back in the day. This concept has spread into business and each day of the week has hashtags which you can use for your own digital marketing  strategy.

To take this one step further I Suggest you set up a template in Canva create a dozen images and have them ready to go.  You can even pre-schedule them to auto post with a service like Tailwind or Hoot Suite.

In keeping with my one marketing thing per day I wanted to share with you a list of popular hashtags broken down by the day of the week.

Guidelines for Hashtags

  • Use no more than two within one Tweet and up to 15 is perfectly acceptable on Instagram.  I think 3-5 is a little more reasonable than 15, but test to see what gives you the best response.
  • When you type # and start to type a tag both Instagram and Twitter will make suggestions for you.
  • Instagram shows how many other photos are using the hashtag when you are adding, which may or may not guide your choice of hashtags to use.

Here is what it will look like for you when adding a post to Instagram.
